I was watching Oprah yesterday and I learned the most incredible thing. This was a rerun that I haven't seen before and I remember my aunt telling me about this. I was so happy that I was able to watch this. I wanted to share because this was so touching to me. I showed Danny this and he was even touched and if you know Danny he has no soft spots, never cries, yada yada yada.
In Kenya, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has this Orphan's Project. What they do is they rescue baby elephants who don't have parents due to poachers. I know poachers! How stupid, why would any one kill an elephant. They are so beautiful. Anyway that is another story that I do not want to get into right now. So these baby elephants are left to basically die. They need their mother to survive.
I learned that elephants are like people. They have emotions just like humans. Some of the orphaned baby elephants die because they are so heartbroken by what has happened to their family.
When one of them dies, all the other elephants will gather and touch the elephant who died with their trunks one last time before they leave the body. I found that so touching.
These people will look for orphaned baby elephants in the wild and when they find them they bring them back to their National Park and raise them until they are grown. They have these bonds with their caretakers that is so beautiful. Once they are grown they are released into the wild. The bonds they made with these people are so amazingly strong that even once they are released into the wild the elephants come back and visit the Trust. When one of them have a baby, they bring that baby back to the people so they can see the baby. They have a water hole at the Trust and when it's really dry and they can't find any water, the elephants will come back to the Trust with other wild elephants. When a new orphan elephant arrives all the elephants will come back and greet the new baby. It's so cute.
There was this story of an elephant who had been hurt. It has spheres stuck in it's body so it came back to the Trust and laid down so the vet could take them out.
You can donate money to the Trust. You can adopt a baby elephant for $50. And you can even go and visit the baby you have adopted. This is something I added to my wish list because it is something that I HAVE to see before I die. This is very inspiring to me and something I hope one day I can witness.
